Introducing A New Baby to Your Fur Baby

Before we had children our dogs were our babies. I am sure most pet owners can relate when I say that they our pets are a part of our family. We were worried how our dogs would react to having a new member of the family and we wanted to make sure that our baby would be safe. Up until that point our dogs got all of our attention. There are many different things you can try before the baby is even born to help make the transition on everyone easier. Here are some effective methods that the Human Society suggests you do to help prepare your pets when introducing a new baby into your home.

Preparing your Pet for Introducing a New Baby:

  • Try to spend less time with your pet each day so that they get used to some alone time. Babies need a lot of attention.
  • Make sure your pet is up to date with their vet appointments and vaccinations.
  • Most pets are calmer if they have been spayed or neutered.
  • Try to address any behavioral problems your pet has now so that you can try to correct it before the baby arrives.
  • If you have any friends and family with infants invite them over so that your pet can become accustomed to babies. Make sure you supervise any interaction.
  • If you choose to make the baby’s room off-limits to your pet than make sure it is enforced ahead of time.
  • When you first arrive home from the hospital with the baby you pet may be anxious to see you so have another person bring the baby in and give the pet the time and attention they need before introducing the baby.
  • Do not forget to spend quality time with your pet once the new baby is born.
