Redeeming Rain Checks
A Rain Check is a slip of paper that you can get from a store when they are out of an item that is on sale. This allows you to come back when they have the item in stock to purchase it for the sale price. It can sometimes be tricky to redeem the rain check. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:
- Present the rain check first - make sure that you give the rain check to the cashier before they scan the item you are applying it to. The cashier needs to manually enter the rain check and adjust the price of the item you are purchasing. I have made the mistake of giving it to them after all my items were scanned. Needless to say, the cashier had to re-scan 16 jars of peanut butter!
- Check your store - Some stores will only let you redeem the rain check at their location and others will accept it any of their locations. Make sure you find out this information ahead of time to avoid frustration of not being able to use the rain check when you are checking out.
- Pay attention to the expiration date - Stores will vary on the expiration date of the rain check. Some will range from 30 days to 90 days from the issue date. You may be able to get another rain check if the store is still out of stock of the item you need when your rain check expires to extend the time.
