Teach Your Kids About Giving Back: Burlington Coat Drive
Burlington Stores sponsored this blog post. The opinions and text are all mine.
With the cold Winter weather upon us I am constantly worrying about my boys staying warm. We are extremely blessed to be able to provide coats for our kids so that they are warm all Winter long. But, there are families who are in desperate need of jackets and coats.
Now that they holidays are over I wanted to focus on teaching my boys about the importance of giving back and helping people in need. Once a month, my kids and I, gather items around our house to donate like toys, clothes, shoes, etc. Since I know how vital it is for families to stay warm during the Winter I thought it would be the perfect time to donate any coats that we have that my kids have outgrown. We live close to a Burlington Store which hosts the "Warm Coats and Warm Hearts" coat drive every year to help out people in the community. Each Burlington Store encourages you to donate a gently-worn coat to help local families in need and in exchange they will give you a 10% off your entire purchase.
Even though my boys are still young I want to teach them about the importance of giving back to our community and understanding that there are people who need our help. I am happy to share these learning experiences with my kids. So, not only did we gather up the coats that we had but we also asked for the help of family and friends.
My boys loved having a job to do. Before they filled up the bags they could not resist playing in the pile of coat first!
We ended up having 21 coats to donate! We filled up the car and headed to our local Burlington store.
Once we were at Burlington the donation box was easy to find since it was right at the entrance of the store. The boys deposited all the coats into the box and it really filled it up since there were only 2 coats inside it when we arrived.
The store manager then came over and thanked us for our donation and we were given our 10% off coupons. My oldest son was proud that we were able to help and he really felt good about it.
I loved teaching my kids about helping other people. It was hard for them to understand that there are people who do not have coats, but this really allowed them to fully learn since they could participate in donating.
