Thanksgiving Activities For Kids
As a parent of young kids I am always looking for fun activities for them to do that incorporate the holidays. I try to find crafts, books or activities that will help teach them about the holiday. It is nice to find new ideas so that we can start our own holiday traditions. With Thanksgiving this month I want to be able to teach them about giving and what the holiday actually means.
5 Thanksgiving Activities for Kids
Make a "Thankful For" Book
Have your children draw a picture each day of what they are thankful for that day and date it for them. Save it in a scrapbook and help them decorate each page with Fall related notions. Keep the book where it can easily be seen and go over the pictures as a family so that your children can get the idea of what Thanksgiving is about.
Make Paper Plate Turkeys
Trace each of your child's hands on construction paper and cut them out. Then, have your children color each of their fingers on the construction paper a different color to make feathers. Glue the feathers onto the back of a paper plate. Then, have your children draw a turkey face on the plate and decorate it with button, ribbon and construction paper. These make cute wall hangings that you can keep over the years.
Read Thanksgiving Books
People are slowly forgetting why we celebrate Thanksgiving, and if your children do not know the meaning of the holiday read them a few books and ask them questions about the book. Ask them to play Native Americans and Pilgrims and re-enact the first dinner. This will get them involved in the history of Thanksgiving and teach them about a holiday that many people are forgetting. My kids are very young so they honestly have no idea what the holiday is about, so I am definitely going to get some books that we can read together that will provide meaning to Thanksgiving for them.
Participate in a Turkey Walk or Parade
Thanksgiving is about getting very full on great food, for days on end, for some people. Wouldn't it be nice to work off some of that food in a fun way? Try a turkey walk, where you and your kids get dressed as turkeys, Pilgrims, or Native Americans and walk or run a mini-marathon for charity. You'll be giving back, having fun, bonding, and getting a great workout! If you are in a parade, you can have fun tossing out candy or beads for parade-goers. If there is not a parade or walk in your area this is also an activity that you can just do with your children. Find things around your home to make the decorations and march around your house!
Volunteer
Show your kids the true meaning of the holiday season and take them to volunteer at a soup kitchen or shelter. Instilling these values as a family will help set your kids up for a lifetime of giving, and it will also make a difference in someone's life as you and your family bond.
