The questions below were answered by Tiffany H. She is a new mom who thrives on keeping things in order and is constantly trying to live a balanced home and work life. She loves to get outside to garden and to cook meals from scratch for her family when time permits. 1. What is your work from home job and how did you get started?I am an office manager for a small local gourmet grocery and catering company, Aurora Provisions, in Portland, Maine. I have worked for Aurora Provisions in many different facets, including most recently managing the in store café, over the course of the past two years before being offered my current position in April of this year. The person handling our daily bookkeeping left the company in January. At that time my general manager recognized a need to transform the open position from part time into a full time role that would encompass human relations as well as retail ordering, part of my previous position, as our company grew. 2. Why did you decide on this position?I decided to accept the position because I saw it as a promotion from my previous role as café manager. Another strong deciding factor for me was the fact that I was seven months pregnant with my first child when I was offered the position. Transitioning to an office role could not have come at a better time for me! It seemed like an ideal opportunity, being able to work primarily from home after my maternity leave. 3. Is this job full-time, or part time? How many hours a week would you say you spend working? My position as office manager is full time. I make my own schedule and try to manage my time in an efficient way, which usually means handling time sensitive matters first thing everyday. I would say I usually work 40 hours a week. Twenty-five of those hours I work from home and the remainder of my work hours are spent in the store. 4. How do you find time to work with your other everyday obligations? It is extremely important that I know how long each work task will take me. Once I prioritize my day I know how to budget my time accordingly. I usually schedule personal appointments during my lunch break of after I have completed my work for the day. 5. What is your favorite part about working from home? From the lack of distraction by coworkers to saving time and money that would have been spent commuting to and from work there are truly so many benefits to working from home it is difficult to choose a favorite. However, with all of the benefits of working from home, hands down my absolute favorite part is being close to my newborn son! 6. Did you need any training or experience for this position? Any particular qualifications?Yes. I was trained to use Quick-books as well as our payroll software. I also had to have our IT person configure my computer to connect remotely to a computer at the store that contains software I need to access daily. A previous knowledge of how to read our sales reports and what vendors we did business with was also extremely helpful during my transition. The most difficult part of training for this position was learning how to prioritize my daily workload. The most important qualifications for this position are being well organized and being able to work independently in an efficient manner. 7. What affect does your income have on you and/or your family? My income has a positive affect on my family. Having the opportunity to make my own schedule affords me the opportunity to manage my time off in such a way that I do not miss much work. I am currently making a slightly higher rate of pay and enjoying much more flexibility than I had in my previous position of café manager. 8. Would you recommend this position for someone who is looking for a work at home job?I would highly recommend a bookkeeping position for someone who is looking to work from home. Many employers do not need this type of work to be done on site. 9. Any advice for other people who are looking to get started with this position? That is a good question! It depends on their current situation. If they already have a bookkeeping position but are not working from home I would suggest scheduling a meeting with their supervisor to discuss the benefits of working from home. If they are looking to get into the field I would suggest taking a few online courses. The more knowledge they have on the topic the better.
Thank You Tiffany!
